Quitting Tobacco for Newly Diagnosed Cancer Patients
In 2010 Fairmont General Hospital did a Quality Improvement project for
patients who are newly diagnosed with cancer and are current tobacco users.
Research has shown that there are significant benefits to quitting tobacco at
the time of a cancer diagnosis and that it is truly never too late to quit. I
developed a poster and booklet based on information from Memorial Sloan
Kettering that provides facts on the improvement that cancer patients can see in
their health and treatment course by eliminating tobacco. I have the booklets
available and will gladly share them with any facility or physician’s office that is
interested. The poster is in a separate attachment and may be printed for
distribution or display. I also will be happy to mail color copies of the poster to
whomever wishes to post them at your facility. We have placed the posters in our
Oncologists’ offices as well as surgeons and family practice physician’s offices.
Research has also shown the greatest quit rate results when these newly
diagnosed patients are approached by a physician at the time of diagnosis. Please

2012 ONS Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Courses at Fairmont General Hospital
Fairmont General Hospital and ONS are offering chemotherapy/biotherapy courses for oncology nurses who work
in either inpatient or outpatient settings. The 2-day course will be offered multiple times throughout the year:
March 14 & 15, 2012 (Wednesday and Thursday) - 8 AM to 4:30 PM - Conference Room B
May 30 & 31, 2012 (Wednesday and Thursday) - 8 AM to 4:30 PM - Conference Room B
July 11 & 12, 2012 (Wednesday and Thursday) - 8 AM to 4:30 PM - Conference Room A
September 19 & 20, 2012 (Wednesday and Thursday) - 8 AM to 4:30 PM - Conference Room B
November 28 & 29, 2012 (Wednesday and Thursday) - 8 AM to 4:30 PM - Conference Room B
